Racing yacht training on the water off Barcelona

MT Sail Academy

Online theory. Real-world preparation.

Prepare for your RYA practical course before you arrive in Menorca. Work through shorebased theory, complete a pre-course skills check and receive your joining instructions in one place.

How it works

Everything you need before you step on board.

The Academy is your preparation hub. You get access as soon as you book a practical course, and your instructor sees your progress before you arrive in Fornells.

  • Pre-course skills check

A short online assessment of your experience, navigation and knots so we can pitch the course at the right level and flag anything to brush up before you fly.

  • RYA shorebased theory modules

Chartwork, tides, buoyage, IRPCS, passage planning, safety and weather — worked through at your own pace with tutor support and practice exercises.

  • Your course programme in advance

A day-by-day outline of what you will cover afloat, the joining instructions, kit list and yacht briefing, so you know exactly what to expect on day one.

  • Feedback and post-course plan

Regular written feedback during the course and a personal development plan afterwards, with the next steps and mileage needed for your following ticket.

Prerequisites

Who can join, and what you need before booking.

Most of our courses are open to anyone with a sense of adventure. A little preparation makes the practical week far more rewarding.

Course level

Open to complete beginners on Competent Crew through to experienced sailors preparing for Yachtmaster. Choose the practical course that matches your current ability.

Language

All tuition is in English. You should be comfortable reading, writing and following safety briefings in English before joining.

Online access

A reliable internet connection and a laptop, tablet or phone are enough to work through the Academy material before you travel.

Theory completion

Day Skipper and Yachtmaster candidates should have completed (or be working through) the relevant RYA shorebased theory. We can guide you on which modules to finish first.

Fitness & mobility

You need to be able to move around the yacht, climb a short companionway and assist in an emergency. Please tell us about any medical conditions or mobility concerns when you book.

Age

Most practical courses are suitable for adults and teenagers aged 16+ when accompanied by an adult. Contact us if you are booking for a younger sailor.

Not sure if you are ready?

Send us a quick message with your sailing background and the course you are interested in. We will recommend the right starting point and tell you which theory to complete first.
