Joining information

Joining Information — Fornells, Menorca

For RYA Start Yachting

Fornells, Es Mercadal, Menorca

Welcome aboard. Please read these joining notes before you travel — they cover meeting arrangements, what to bring, safety, and life on the yacht.

1. Meeting point & time

It is important that everyone joins the boat at the agreed time and location in Fornells. If you are in any doubt, call one of us on the numbers above. Please text Michael when you land and again when you arrive at the base.

2. Getting to Fornells

Fly into Mahón (Menorca) airport (MAH). A taxi to Fornells takes about 30 minutes. Public bus service is limited — a taxi is usually the simplest option. If you'd like us to arrange a pickup let us know in advance.

3. Clothing & kit

Bring warm clothing suitable for layering to cover all weather conditions. Even in sunshine it can be cold on the water, in the wind, out of the sun and in the evenings. Shoes and waterproof boots should have non-slip, non-marking soles. Please use a soft, collapsible bag — there is no room for rigid suitcases. We provide bed linen (pillow and case, bottom sheet), a sleeping bag, and one personal towel for your stay on the yacht.

4. Waterproofs

Waterproof clothing is recommended and can be provided for the duration of the course, issued on board. Please confirm in advance if you need it.

5. Sun protection

Bring suncream, sunglasses, and a hat.

6. Personal safety

Personal safety is all-important. You must take responsibility for your own safety as seriously as we do. We will provide a life jacket and safety harness for you.

7. Insurance & personal effects

The school is insured for instruction. It accepts no liability for personal injury, accident or loss, and we strongly recommend Students take out their own personal insurance covering sickness, accidents on board and loss of personal effects. As noted in the application form, we take no responsibility for loss or damage to electronic devices taken on board.

8. Meals & dietary requirements

We cater very well for average tastes within the practicalities of life aboard. Please let us know of any dietary requirements or allergies well before arrival — preferably at the time of booking. We provide basic provisions on board: a light breakfast and lunch are catered, and evening meals while in transit. When in port, everyone shares the cost of meals ashore.

9. Yacht club rules

We make no charge for staying on the yacht or its use when sailing. The yacht club we use charges us for your time there, and we are responsible for your conduct as members. We expect professional yachtsmen and women to act as such.

10. Life on board

Participation in meal preparation, serving and cleaning is a normal part of life aboard and expected of everyone.

11. Mooring fees

On delivery passages, mooring fees away from the base are covered by us. On courses staying in the Menorca area, the fees are included in the course cost.

12. Documentation

Please bring your passport and any RYA/ICC certificates you already hold. It is not unusual to be stopped by customs or police, and they will require to see your passport or ID.

We look forward to welcoming you on board. Any further questions, call or email us at sail@mtsail.com.
